Physical Properties of Soils

• A Soil mass is in general a three phase system 

(material) composed of solids, liquid and gaseous 

matter

• The physical properties of soil is very much 

influenced by the relative volumetric proportions 

of solid, water and air in a soil mass

• There are three types of relationships:

1. Volume –Volume relationship

2. Weight –Weight relationship

3. Weight –Volume relationship
